Westlake Handles Stony Point
Round Rock, TX — On a blustery Friday night with the last vestiges of winter hanging on, the Westlake ruggers traveled to Round Rock for a cup match against Stony Point High School. Despite a savage wind that wreaked havoc with both the kicking and passing game, Westlake easily handled their opponents and won by the score of 34-7.
Westlake fought the wind the entire first half and still managed to maintain good field position, due in no small part to the frequent and timely punts executed by fly half Markham Sayers. Westlake’s scrum was also a factor in the first half. Although easily outweighed by fifty pounds per man, the scrum held its own against the mob from Stony Point, on the strength of Sebastian Medina, Ellis Glaw, Ari Shita, Alex Putnam, and James Howe.
The good field position paid off for the Chaps as Paul Brown scores two tries during the period, one of which came off of a heads up pass by Alex Lokken who found Brown open on the outside. Evan Von Zur Muehlen also scored off a scrum down deep in opponent’s territory. Von Zur Muehlen’s kicking game was also outstanding. He impressed the fans by nailing two conversion kicks into the teeth of a ferocious wind.
Westlake had the wind at its back in the second half and extended its lead. Markham Sayers added a try early in the period to compliment his kicking prowess. Ellis Glaw also scored during the period after dragging what appeared to be half of the opposing scrum across the try line. Von Zur Muehlen’s kicking game was perfect in the second half. He notched two long penalty kicks and two conversions to seal the victory for Westlake 34-7.
In the second match of the evening, Westlake’s second side trounced Stony Point’s second side by a score of 46-0. Fly half Thomas Robison had an outstanding game. He scored two tries and two conversion kicks during the match. He and scrum half Jordan Cox also kept the ball moving among the backs as Westlake pressed its advantage of superior team speed. In addition to Robision, tries were also scored by Chris Tanner, Daniel Twomey, Chris Canter, Jackson Smith, and Adam Lowe. Chris Canter also tacked on a penalty kick and Adam Lowe and Zac Clark each nailed conversion kicks after a try.
