Coach Joe “the Cleric” Daly

The son of an illicit union between a defrocked Irish Catholic missionary and a notary public Congolese woman, Joe was first introduced to rugby in North Africa.  After a misspent youth split between both Africa and southeast Washington, D.C., his rugby skills were honed in the shadows of the White Mountains of New Hampshire when, in 1967, he began playing scrum half and wing for the terror of Ivy League rugby:  Dartmouth.  (Joe also played football for Dartmouth and it was his 9 yard carry against Penn one year that broke the Ivy League record for most ground yardage gained in a single game.)

After finally realizing that he could hardly just ski for the rest of his life in Vermont, Joe found his way to Austin in 1972, where he began playing for the Austin Rugby Club.  He helped found the Austin Huns in 1974, where he continued his inspired scrum half play until 1979.  Shortly thereafter, in 2001, he began a long and successful coaching career with the Austin Area High School Rugby club.   But perhaps his most useful attribute is his knack for somehow getting Westlake Rugby match footage into the diplomatic pouch bound for, and thus, into the hands of, our humble correspondent, Mr. Charles Vermont.  We’re all very grateful for not only Joe’s impeccable rugby credentials and his unparalleled coaching ability, but also for his old Dartmouth, missionary, and diplomatic connections that have served us so well.
